Mycelia are the network of tiny filaments creating a rootlike structure connecting mushrooms colonies. While the mushrooms remain stationary, the mycelium spread out across the forest floor, scouting and relaying information. These information networks have been compared to a natural internet! Through mycelium, mushroom colonies hold and share knowledge that allows them to plan the decomposition and restoration of the soil out hundreds of years into the future. This seems like a metaphor for the difference between using technology for abundance or acquisition, an important teaching from nature to us modern humans.
While always an appealing goal, recently I’m struck with the fact that it is matter of life and death for art to align with intersectional values pushing humans towards spiritual and physical liberation. Our planet is on the edge of collapse and calls out to anyone who will listen… begging us to change our relationship with her before she is forced to save herself from us.
Inspired by the philosophy Robin Wall Kimmer illustrates in her incredible book, Braiding Sweetgrass, I’ve rededicated my art to the idea that human’s purpose is to celebrate and tell the story of the rest of the living universe and thrive in a practice of loving reciprocation with our ecosystem, a masterpiece artwork creating herself.
My understanding of these values and their purpose evolves as I practice them, this is a statement to attempting to separate the meaningful and meaningless in modern life. Now it’s time for your to add your voice!! <3
